Heritage
Festival & Peterfest Open Day. For one weekend only, the hugely popular
Heritage Festival is back and is bigger and better than
ever. This year’s Heritage Festival will take place over the
first weekend in July when costumed re-enactors from
throughout history will be staging arena displays and living
history encampments in the Cathedral grounds including Roman
soldiers, Norman Knights, English Civil War Roundheads and
Napoleonic Redcoats. The sprawling medieval market will also
return to the Cathedral green but the festival
will also spill out on to the square with a First World War
tank and recruiting party, World War II
tea van and re-enactors. Costumed characters will be seen on
the streets, including medieval jesters and a royal visit
from Henry VIII and Queen
Katharine of Aragon. There will also be a guest lecture on
Saturday evening in St John’s church by medieval historian
and Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones - tickets are available
from Peterborough Museum and the Key Theatre.
So from archery in the Dean’s Gardens to Living History
Precinct Tours, as well as a sumptuous hog roast and

Every night, in a tradition dating from
886 A.D., at 9 pm. the Wakeman blows his horn in the
Market Square
at the four corners of the Obelisk to 'set the watch'. The
City has 3 'sounding' horns, the oldest of which (no longer
blown because of antiquity) is known as the 'Charter' horn
and is dated A.D. 886 since, according to ancient tradition,
it symbolised the granting of 'charter rites' to Ripon in
that year. The second horn is dated 1690; the third, an
African Ox horn (blown daily today) was given to the city in
1865 by the then serving Mayor.

of 1216. Experience the atmosphere and drama of a
medieval castle under attack. The Siege of 1216 was one of
the bloodiest that Dover Castle had ever seen. Witness the
opposing forces prepare for battle, with armour displays,
fletchers and blacksmiths crafting their weaponry and an awe
inspiring trebuchet in action. Experience the fear and
anticipation of battle with the rallying cry of generals as
they prepare their soldiers for the impending bloodshed.

Dorset
Medieval Festival. The festival will present all the spectacle and
pageantry of the Middle Ages, with jousting, archery,
cannon-fire, minstrels, jesters, falconry and combat
displays. The emphasis will once again be on living history,
with re-enactors in several encampments showing off
traditional craft skills such as cookery, rush-weaving,
wool-carding and spinning, net-making and
candle-dipping, recreating the sounds and sights of a
genuine medieval tented village. The many strolling
musicians will add greatly to the atmosphere.

Medieval Hall, near Castle Caereinon, Powys
The largest
restored medieval aisled hall in Wales will open its
doors to visitors the first weekend of every month from
July to September with a costumed guided tour and
medieval living history displays in the grounds,
including 15th century cooking, crafts and archery. The day offers a unique insight into
life in medieval Wales and is supported by the local
heritage group ‘History Matters’ and reenactors from the
‘Montgomery Levy’ living history society.
July 3rd and 4th 2010 sees them host a visit from members of
the William Stanley’s Household, whose members from
throughout the UK will help to transport the visitors back
to the life and times of the

Britain 70th Anniversary Living History Weekend.
Bring the whole family to the RAF Battle of Britain
Living History Weekend to watch re-enactments and learn more
