Currently staged twice a year in February and October, the International Living History Fair has become the primary multi-period market place for re-enactors, historical interpreters and historical enthusiasts across Europe. The International Living History Fair exists to provide a market place, a meeting place and a fabulous opportunity for all, visitors and re-enactors alike, to meet and discuss all periods of our historical past. VIKINGS AND OTHER INVADERS
410 - 1066

Heritage Festival & Peterfest Open Day. For one weekend only, the hugely popular Heritage Festival is back and is bigger and better than ever. This year’s Heritage Festival will take place over the first weekend in July when costumed re-enactors from throughout history will be staging arena displays and living history encampments in the Cathedral grounds including Roman soldiers, Norman Knights, English Civil War Roundheads and Napoleonic Redcoats. The sprawling medieval market will also return to the Cathedral green but the festival will also spill out on to the square with a First World War tank and recruiting party, World War II tea van and re-enactors. Costumed characters will be seen on the streets, including medieval jesters and a royal visit from Henry VIII and Queen Katharine of Aragon. There will also be a guest lecture on Saturday evening in St John’s church by medieval historian and Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones - tickets are available from Peterborough Museum and the Key Theatre.

So from archery in the Dean’s Gardens to Living History Precinct Tours, as well as a sumptuous hog roast and children’s entertainment, what better way to spend a summer weekend with your family than engaging in the biggest and most exciting free festival around? Every night, in a tradition dating from  886 A.D.,  at 9 pm. the Wakeman blows his horn in the Market Square at the four corners of the Obelisk to 'set the watch'. The City has 3 'sounding' horns, the oldest of which (no longer blown because of antiquity) is known as the 'Charter' horn and is dated A.D. 886 since, according to ancient tradition, it symbolised the granting of 'charter rites' to Ripon in that year. The second horn is dated 1690; the third, an African Ox horn (blown daily today) was given to the city in 1865 by the then serving Mayor.

The Siege of 1216. Experience the atmosphere and drama of a medieval castle under attack. The Siege of 1216 was one of the bloodiest that Dover Castle had ever seen. Witness the opposing forces prepare for battle, with armour displays, fletchers and blacksmiths crafting their weaponry and an awe inspiring trebuchet in action. Experience the fear and anticipation of battle with the rallying cry of generals as they prepare their soldiers for the impending bloodshed.

Dorset Medieval Festival, Winterborne Came, near Dorchester, Dorset

Dorset Medieval Festival. The festival will present all the spectacle and pageantry of the Middle Ages, with jousting, archery, cannon-fire, minstrels, jesters, falconry and combat displays. The emphasis will once again be on living history, with re-enactors in several encampments showing off traditional craft skills such as cookery, rush-weaving, wool-carding and spinning, net-making and candle-dipping, recreating the sounds and sights of a genuine medieval tented village. First weekend of every month, July to September 2010 11am - 4pm
Ty Mawr Medieval Hall, near Castle Caereinon, Powys

The largest restored medieval aisled hall in Wales will open its doors to visitors the first weekend of every month from July to September with a costumed guided tour and medieval living history displays in the grounds, including 15th century cooking, crafts and archery. The day offers a unique insight into life in medieval Wales and is supported by the local heritage group ‘History Matters’ and reenactors from the ‘Montgomery Levy’ living history society.

July 3rd and 4th 2010 sees them host a visit from members of the William Stanley’s Household, whose members from throughout the UK will help to transport the visitors back to the life and times of the mid 15th Century. Free car parking with toilets facilities and light refreshments available, disabled access on request and tickets are £6 for adults, children £3 and concessions £4

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, Lincoln Green Lane, Tewkesbury

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. Tewkesbury Medieval Festival includes a huge re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury, featuring around 2000 warriors, including knights in full armour, gunners with cannon and hand guns, archers with the traditional English Longbow, and men at arms with swords, spears and other weapons of the period, all brought to life with a lively and informed commentary, and taking place on part of the site of the original battle of 1471. Visit King Edward and his court in their sumptuous camp. See how ordinary medieval soldiers and their families lived on campaign. Medieval Jousting. Enjoy the thrills and spills of medieval jousting and cheer on your favourite knight as our competitors break lances in real mounted combat. The knights' teams complete in mounted skill at arms and there's plenty of laughter with entertainment by our own jester and medieval musicians. Complete with living history, townsfolk and soldiers, fully armoured Knights and the pomp and pageantry of a medieval joust this event is a great family day out. Plus, there is a full programme of children's interactive activities with the Time Travellers.

Kentwell's Great Annual Re-Creation of Tudor Life transports visitors back to a year in the 16th Century. Re-Creation by a Time Tunnel through which the Re-Creation is entered and left. Restored Historic Almshouse. Visit one of the Geffrye’s 18th century almshouses which has been fully restored to its original condition, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of London’s poor and elderly in former times.

Timed entries on Saturdays are at 11.00am, 12.00pm, 2.00pm and 3.00pm.

Tickets: Adults £2.00, Friends of the Geffrye, disabled visitors and children under 16 free. Numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that only groups of 8 or more can book in advance.

Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival. Llandrindod Wells is proud to present the leading Victorian Festival in the UK today.  Set in the beautiful heart of Wales, it is held in the last full week of August before the Bank Holiday. As Llandrindod was a thriving spa resort in the Victorian era it seems natural to base the Festival on the Victorian theme.  The town's unspoilt architecture provides a perfect backdrop to the celebrations, and on Temple Gardens and Middleton Street we have ideal venues for the many different types of street entertainment provided free  throughout the day. Costermongers' Harvest Festival Parade. A parade of a marching band, street traders ("Costermongers"), Pearly Kings and Queens and Victorian Characters from 1-3pm, starting at Guildhall Yard, Gresham Street EC2 London. This is followed by a Harvest Festival service at 3-4pm at St Mary Le Bow Church, Cheapside EC2. A "harvest festival" is a traditional thanksgiving ceremony, to give thanks after crops have been harvested successfully.

Armed Forces Weekend. Celebrating the role of the armed forces throughout history and in particular the role of the cadet forces.  The event will also look at how Bletchley Park assisted the armed forces during World War Two.  The two day event will feature a range of wartime displays and re-enactment groups, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Flypasts, featuring a Spitfire and a Dakota* and a number of entertaining lectures about the Armed Forces and Cadet Corps. Telling the story of the siege of the British garrison in the township of Ladysmith in 1899, the highlight of the weekend will be a Cadet Field Gun Run competition.

Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Living History Weekend. Bring the whole family to the RAF Battle of Britain Living History Weekend to watch re-enactments and learn more about life during the battle. This year, the RAF Museum is inviting visitors to remember the conflict which took place in the skies during WWII and is often dubbed the nation's "finest hour". Highlights include:

  • Flypast by a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (weather permitting)
  • Living history areas with re-enactors
  • Performance by the RAFA band
  • Film screenings of the Battle of Britain and Deep Blue Sky in the Museum's 250-seat cinema
  • Archive film footage from the Battle of Britain including the White Eagle which examines the contribution made by Polish Fighter Pilots during the Battle of Britain, and Fighter Pilot which shows actual Battle footage
  • Outdoor vintage vehicle display
