Holiday Cottages with Thatched Roofs

As you might imagine from a site like Historic UK, thatched cottages are our proverbial bread and butter! At the time of writing we currently offer 50 properties across England and Scotland, with the majority of these cottages in the southern English counties of Kent, Cornwall, Gloucestershire (including the Cotswolds) and Oxfordshire. We also now list six properties based abroad in France and Ireland.

The use of straw, reeds or grasses for roofing goes back to the Bronze Age in Britain and was very common until the Victorian era, when tiles became popular – and cheaper! Even so, apparently there are more thatched roofs in the UK than anywhere else in Europe. One of the most famous, and most photographed, thatched cottages in the world is Anne Hathaway’s Cottage at Shottery near Stratford-Upon-Avon. It is here that Shakespeare is said to have courted Anne before they married.

The skilled art of thatching is still alive and well in the UK today. Thatchers often leave their own unique signature on the newly thatched roofs, from decorative ridge designs to reed peacocks and corn dollies.

We offer a range of holiday cottages with thatched roofs, from romantic cottages for couples right up to larger holiday homes sleeping up to 12 people. You can filter the properties by size on the next page, or alternatively use the search bar at the top of this page to search the cottages by town, city, region, county or country.
