Forming part of a small former farmstead, it is accessed by a gated unmade farm track and occupies an elevated position overlooking the Eskdale Valley. Ideal for walkers and nature lovers, it lies a short walk away from Stanley Force Waterfall and Devoke Water, and the village of Eskdale (3 miles) with its shop and pub. Enjoying a splendid position in the delightful village of Threlkeld at the foot of the Blencathra Fells, this traditional stone-built cottage is cosy and tastefully furnished, and has its own small paved sitting-out area. The end of a little row, it is close to wonderful walks in all directions. Derwent Water, with its wooded shores and boat hire, is 10 minutes' drive, as is Keswick, popular with climbers and walkers, and offering sports facilities, swimming and golf. Bassenthwaite Lake and Ullswater, with their spectacular scenery and Penrith are all within 20 minutes' drive.

Whitehall   MEALSGATE

Sleeps 8. For a holiday with a difference, this wonderfully atmospheric 14th century Pele Tower provides a magnificent setting for a large family or group, perfectly placed for exploring the Lake District and Solway Coast. Grade I listed, the house has been owned by the same family for 150 years. The house stands in an acre of grounds containing the picturesque ruins of a Victorian manor house. Two of the larger lawns can be used for family games. Inside the house are spacious rooms, including a first floor sitting room complete with enormous Tudor stone fireplace.
