Chillingham Castle, CHILLINGHAM

At first a 12th century stronghold, Chillingham became a fully fortified Castle in the 14th century. This remarkable castle with its alarming dungeons and torture chamber has, since the 1200s, been continuously owned by the family of the Earls Grey and their relations. Part of the castle and the coach house have been converted into comfortable holiday apartments.

This elegant and spacious holiday apartment occupies the entire top floor of historic Craster Tower, a superbly preserved Grade II* country house dating from the 15th century, built around a 14th-century pele tower. Set above part of the owners’ home but with a separate entrance, this magnificent penthouse was refurbished in 2008 and has a Visit Britain 5 Star gold award.  The picturesque village of Craster is a short walk down a footpath through woods and fields or two minutes in the car. Langley Castle, HEXHAM

Built in 1350 during the reign of Edward III, Langley Castle has retained its architectural integrity and is regarded as one of the few medieval fortified Castle Hotels in England. Set in its own ten acre woodland estate, the castle's 7 feet thick walls provide a peaceful and tranquil refuge in which to escape from today's hustle and bustle to a bygone age. The guest rooms are individually unique all with private facilities, some with four-poster beds, sauna and spa bath.

Carr Hall Castle  near HALIFAX

Winner of Channel 5's I Own Britain's Best Home 2008. Exclusive Use venue. This Grade II folly looks like a Norman castle. In fact, it started life in the early 19th century as a farmhouse and barn for breeding shire horses. These were converted into a castle by the Shaw family in about 1860. The castle boasts battlements, towers with arrow slit windows and arch headed windows. The ruins of a mill stand in the grounds and there is also a working water wheel. The castle was bought by Terry George and Michael Rothwell in 2002 and they have since spent almost £1 million modernising it. The four years of renovations have included converting the old stable block into a indoor, heated swimming pool.....
