19th October 2019 at Stonham Barns Showground, Pettaugh Road, Stonham Aspal, Suffolk IP146AT
For the second year, the Saxon and Viking Festival promises to offer visitors the chance to get up close and personal with bloodthirsty warriors and experience a taste of what life was like in Dark Ages East Anglia, closing with a ceremonial torchlight procession and Viking boat burning.
Standing shoulder to shoulder in the shield wall will be the re-enactment groups Wuffa, Ormsgard, Ealdfaeder, Herigeas Hundas, Dragonshields, Wolves of Midgard, Oden’s Aett, Colchester Historical Enactment Society, Wolf and Spear, Age of Penda, Shiltron of Fortriu, Ordgard (tbc)…..plus more groups to be added.
This year the 36 foot replica Saxon boat Sae Wylfing will be part of the event, and children can explore the boat and even chance their arm against a Saxon warrior!
There will be demonstrations of Glima, which is Viking wrestling and also Bridge Fighting, which will pay homage to The Battle of Stamford Bridge between the Saxons and the invading Viking army in 1066.
Alongside the outdoor fighting demonstrations, the festival will also play host to presentations from experts and historians on everything from Viking Saga Story Telling to tales of the Heathen Hordes, and music from Dark Age musicians to bring the festival to life.
There will be fun for the whole family with traders selling their wares, visitors will have the chance to ‘Have a Go Archery’ and to enjoy Axe throwing, free face painting and children’s activities, with food and public bar open all day.
The festival will finish at dusk with a ceremonial torchlight parade and boat burning, led by historian Peter Seymour.
Gates open at 12 midday and the event will finish at 8pm on 19th October 2019.
