In a tradition that goes back to the 13th century, on St Nicholas Day (or the nearest Sunday) a Boy Bishop is elected to ‘rule’ until Holy Innocents Day (December 28th). The tradition was abolished by Queen Elizabeth I but has been revived most notably at Hereford and Salisbury Cathedrals.
