Bed and Breakfast Accommodation - 2 Rooms
Exclusive Use Wedding Venue

Gwydir Castle is situated in the beautiful Conwy Valley and is set within a Grade 1 listed, 10-acre garden. Built by the illustrious Wynn family c1500, Gwydir is a fine example of a Tudor courtyard house, incorporating re-used medieval material from the dissolved Abbey of Maenan.

The first castle was built by Howell Coetmore, who fought under the Black Prince as commander of longbowmen at the battle of Poitiers in 1356. Following the Wars of the Roses the castle was rebuilt in around 1490 by Meredith, founder of the Wynn dynasty and a leading supporter of King Henry VII.

In the 1570's Gwydir was the home of Katherine of Berain, cousin of Queen Elizabeth I. There is a long tradition of entertaining royalty at Gwydir. King Charles I is said to have visited in September 1645 as guest of Sir Richard Wynn. In 1899 King George V and Queen Mary stayed here as Duke and Duchess of York. More recently, in July 1998, HRH The Prince of Wales opened the newly reinstated 1640's Dining Room, the fine panelling and carving of which was dramatically recovered from the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1996.

Famous for its peacocks, the castle is also known for its many ghosts and has the reputation for being one of the most haunted houses in Wales.

Accommodation. Two rooms are available; the 'King's Room,' with its en-suite bathroom, and the 'Duke of Beaufort's Chamber,' with its own private bathroom adjacent. Both rooms have four-poster beds, overlooking the gardens.

The bedrooms are furnished with antiques and, whilst retaining their historic charm, have all the (discreet) concessions to comfort and modernity that the gentle traveller might require.

Weddings. The Castle is an approved premises for Civil Marriages and our two early Tudor ground-floor halls are available for your ceremony and reception. This naturally includes the open log fires and candles that one might expect in such a romantic and atmospheric context. The important ten acre gardens are also available for your use and are included in the package.

To ensure quality of service we have contracted our own caterer who would be happy to provide you with an outline of menus and menu prices on request, as well as accommodating any special catering requirements you may have.

If you would like to visit Gwydir Castle we would be delighted to show you around and discuss arrangements. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further information.
