Fingals has
evolved over the last 25 years out of an historic 17th century Devon
farmhouse. The ancient farm site is mentioned in the Domesday Book but little remains of the original house. In
the early 18C, when farming was quite profitable, the owners
gentrified the old farmhouse by adding on a Queen Anne facade.
The atmosphere
inside the hotel is still true to its roots. The
sitting-room, which was the farmhouse kitchen, still has a
rustic feel with the original Inglenook fireplace and
wattle-and-daube ceiling with hooks for drying hams. Oak
beams, wood panelling, antique carpets, open fires - the new
and the old blend together to create a feeling of warmth and
well-being.
Fingals is for
families, for house parties and for single people - you come
away to the country to stay with friends, Richard Johnston
being your host. There is a restaurant with excellent French
cuisine using all local produce; a well-stocked bar for the
thirsty; a library for those of more literary tastes and even
a snooker table. There is plenty for everyone to do from
walking, boating on the Dart, to swimming in the indoor heated
swimming pool with a sauna and jacuzzi, playing croquet, table
tennis, lazing in the garden with a good book or tennis on the
grass court. All this adds up to a unique experience - a
friendly, fun, sociable, relaxing, informal hotel with a
difference!
