An historic Georgian house overlooking Talisker Bay on Skye’s West coast

Sleeping up to 12 people ~ Start day: Friday ~ Prices from £ 1999 ~
Regret No Pets or Children under 13 yrs

Talisker House was, for generations, after Dunvegan Castle the favourite residence of the MacLeod Estates.  For almost two centuries the Laird of Talisker was next in line to the MacLeod Chieftain.

The existing house is thought to date from the 1720s with further additions in the 1760s and the early 19th century.  The house was visited by Tenant, Boswell and Johnson and sketched by William Daniell in the 1810s.  His 1815 sketch of Talisker belongs to the Trustees of the British Museum

The white painted harled stone house, sitting at the foot of Preshal Mor and overlooking Talisker Bay, contains beautifully proportioned rooms, original fireplaces, shuttered sash windows and ornate cornice work.  The current owners have decorated and furnished the house superbly in keeping with the period with lush wallpapers and paints, antique furniture and beautiful fabrics, sourced from around the world.

Well equipped kitchen with 4-oven Aga (no microwave), dishwasher, pulley clothes dryer, payphone.  2 x utility rooms with freezer, washing machine, ironing boards etc.  Large dining room.  Garden sitting room with multi-fuel stove.

First floor: accessed by fine staircase to landing.  Large drawing room with baby grand piano and views of garden and Talisker Bay.  Two four poster double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms with showers and WCs.  One double bedroom with en-suite shower-room and WC.  One twin bedroom with washbasin and en-suite shower-\room and WC.

Most windows in the house have shutters as well as very generous long curtains.  The house is heated electrically, with night storage heaters supplemented by ‘total control’ timed electric heaters, a multi-fuel stove in the garden room and an open fireplace in the drawing room.  This combination produces a truly warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the house at all times of year.

Talisker House is cared for by a couple who live nearby and act as caretaker and housekeeper/gardener.  They will help with any queries guests may have and come in to the house on most days to keep the house clean.  There is no television at Talisker due to a lack of reception; there is, however a radio/tape/CD player in the kitchen and a portable combined radio/tape player in the house.

The gardens and grounds of Talisker House extend to approximately 41 acres.  To the front of the house is a beautifully maintained garden with lawns, herbaceous borders, rhododendrons and a large number of mature trees and shrubs including a monkey puzzle tree.  The garden is surrounded by a beech hedge and stone wall and the whole property is sheltered by hills on three sides and favoured by the warm Gulf Stream current. A small burn flows to the south of the house and to the north and either side of the long drive is woodland, full of bluebells in the spring.

There is a sparsely used public right of way to the east of the house which leads to Talisker Bay, some 15 minutes’ walk away. The path continues, following the stream, until it reaches Talisker Bay, a wide beach of large pebbles and golden sand.  Before reaching the pebbles, there is a flat grassy area where you can relax and look at the scenery.  On both sides of the bay there are cliffs, and on the right-hand side of the bay is a beautiful waterfall.
