The Most Northerly Castle Hotel in the World

Sailing into Shapinsay you cannot help but notice Balfour Castle, an imposing multi-turreted structure looking something like a Castle from a Disney Movie.

Balfour Castle sits on a wooded brae only hundreds of yards from the sea. A quiet and peaceful place, an elegant Victorian structure, full of style and elegance and now a private family home open to guests who appreciate something out of the ordinary.

The Castle, complete with original furniture, dates back to the 1840s and guests have access to its main rooms of library, dining room, drawing room with adjoining conservatory. There is a chapel in the castle too.

The library is the meeting place before dinner in the evening and there you will find a small bar. Dinner and breakfast are taken in the ground floor dining room.

Guest bedrooms are individual in character with canopy, four poster and brass beds. Most rooms have en-suite facilities and there is a family room available.

The area surrounding the Castle is wooded and guests are very welcome to wander there at their leisure. In the midst of the wood you will discover a two acre walled kitchen garden where most of the vegetables for dinner are cultivated.

The Castle is licensed for weddings, both civil and religious; you can marry in the Castle Chapel and hold your reception in the Castle's Drawing Room or Conservatory.
