The
Mill dates back to the 16th century when Thurnham was the site of
a cloth mill. In 1824, the Lancaster Canal Company purchased
Thurnham Mill and in 1829 the three storey stone block was
rebuilt. For nearly 100 years the mill was powered by canal
water. This was very unusual, as almost all other mills were
driven by rivers. In 1926 water turbines took the place of
the mill wheel and finally electricity replaced water as the
energy source for the mill. The
hotel has 17 en-suite bedrooms, with a lift to all floors.
Each room has its own private bathroom and unique decor,
reflecting the style and character of the original mill. All
our rooms are comfortably furnished and have remote control
television, hairdryers, tea and coffee making facilities, direct
dial telephone and of course, a bed! There
are six spacious family rooms and children are most welcome.
Within the grounds there is an outdoor play area. Thurnham Mill
has facilities for the disabled. The
Canalside Restaurant offers a varied, superbly cooked range of
dishes at reasonable prices. Look out for our resident flock
of ducks! On sunny days aperitifs and meals can be served
outside on the terrace, where you can watch the passing
narrowboats. Flagstone
floors and original wooden beams make the Millers Tavern a warm
and friendly place in which to meet, relax by our open fire and
enjoy a wide range of traditional ales, malt whiskies, wines and
spirits. We also serve a wide range of Bar Snacks both in
the Millers Tavern and outside on the terrace. Thurnham
Mill welcomes business guests and offers a range of business
support facilities, making it the ideal venue for small meetings
and business lunches. The
hotel staff will be pleased to arrange Golf, Sea, Coarse or Game
Fishing, Cycling and Horse Riding.
