Description

Kings and queens have stayed here. Courtiers have flirted with ladies-in-waiting in the ancient yew-hedged gardens. Serving girls have chattered in the stone-flagged courtyard. Today, Thornbury Castle still resonates with history. But step behind the heavy oak doors and you’ll find a magnificent hotel with roaring fires, delicious modern cuisine and sumptuous bedchambers – a truly special setting for a weekend away or more formal occasions.

Built in 1511, Thornbury Castle is the only Tudor castle to operate as a hotel and restaurant in England. Food at Thornbury Castle offers plenty of modern internationally inspired dishes as well as some traditional favourites such as our famous Treacle Tart and Butterscotch Pudding and Roasts on Sundays.

Enjoy regal dreams in the Duke’s Bedchamber where King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn slept, or favour the Gloucester Bedchamber and wake up to a view of the oldest Tudor gardens in England – the Privy Garden and Goodly Gardens. There are 26 bedchambers and all are fabulously atmospheric, most with four poster or coronet beds, stone walls, tapestries, roaring fires, ornate carved ceilings and views to historic parkland and the River Severn beyond. All rooms are luxuriously warm – most have real fires.

Thornbury Castle is ideally situated for exploring the West Country. To the south lies the historic city of Bath with it’s Roman Baths, renowned architecture and excellent shopping. Further south but still within easy motoring distance are Stonehenge and the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey where King Arthur and Queen Guinevere are said to be buried. And to the east lie the Cotswolds, quaint villages set amongst glorious countryside, and of course Cheltenham, home to the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup.
