Sudeley Castle

Description

Sudeley Castle has played an important role in the turbulent and changing times of England’s past. The castle was a base for Richard III during the Wars of the Roses and saw battle during the Civil War – look out for the cannon ball hole that can still be seen in the Octagon Tower.

Inside, the castle contains many fascinating treasures from ancient Roman times to the present day, discover the ’20 treasures of Sudeley’ and visit the extensive exhibitions – including the castle’s rare textile collection – which bring to life the rich history of one of England’s most royally-connected castles.

Outside, there are 1,200 acres of beautiful grounds and striking ruins to explore. Sudeley Castle’s gardens are world-renowned, providing variety and colour from spring through to autumn. The centrepiece is the Queen’s Garden – so named because four of England’s queens – Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I – once admired the hundreds of varieties of roses found in the garden.

In addition, the Knot Garden, which is typical of the Elizabethan era, is designed based on the pattern of a dress worn by Elizabeth I, a portrait of which hangs in the castle.

Sudeley Castle is the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds. Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives, lies entombed in the beautiful 15th century church found within the award-winning gardens.

Individuals, couples, families, groups and schools are guaranteed an enriching experience and a day to remember when visiting Sudeley Castle.

A new family attraction ‘‘Lost in the Willows’ which is inspired by the classic children’s novel, The Wind in the Willows. Working alongside Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, the living maze and dipping pond feature family favourites Ratty, Mole and Badger.
